Commemorating the Individual and the Action

Working in law enforcement has never been an easy job, but many recent happenings have made it even harder. People have gotten very quick to cast disparaging remarks and commentary at law officers in general, and making it harder to do an effective job.

As the atmosphere continues to grow hostile outside the department, unity and support within the department are more important than ever.

One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is through recognizing and acknowledging important achievements and dedicated service. One of the most traditional ways to do so is with a medal. However, you can’t really keep those with you all the time. And if everyone who was part of a specific action wore their medals everywhere, it could engender even more disparagement.

Challenge coins, on the other hand, can be a unique keepsake that law officers can have on hand all the time and produce whenever someone else with the same coin requires it.

Giving out a challenge coin like this may seem like a simple gesture, but it can be a positive and uplifting experience – something that only the people who were involved in the action will truly understand.

Acknowledgement like this can make a huge difference for individuals and groups, especially when they’re putting themselves in harm’s way on a regular basis. It can help build some morale and increase emotional stability because they will all own something in common – something they can keep with them at all times and bring out when they want to talk about the reason they have it.

In essence, this is hard proof of membership or participation – a reminder that they were there when something important happened.

A lot of people enjoy collecting and trading challenge coins, and there are a lot of coins that certainly have a great deal of intrinsic value (like those handed out by the president). However, there is even more sentimental value when the coin is specifically given law officers to commemorate their actions and dedication.

Tell me what you think. Are challenge coins a good way to reward special situations and circumstances? Do you think there's a better way to show appreciation? Let me know. I would love to hear what you think.
