Charismatic Leadership Within Police Departments

Most police supervisors undergo some type of leadership training as a construct for better management of the rank and file. With countless tomes of new leadership models coming on the market from Transformational Leadership to Servant- Leader, are departments developing more effective leaders among its ranks? The biggest problem with many leadership models is their methodologies often do not align with the temperament and personality of the supervisor. Most leadership models attempt to either… Continue

Using Anonymous Crime Surveys to Reconcile Perception and Reality in Schools

Here’s the bottom line: if students feel unsafe, they are going to behave oddly or in ways that distract from their education. If parents perceive that drug dealers are wandering the halls of the school, they are going to continue to place pressure and demands on administrators to invest in anti-drug programs and security guards, even if the drugs are actually coming from their own medicine cabinets. In these cases, it is not the security programs that need to be changed, but rather the… Continue

Back to Basics: Batons & Belts

Robert Hindi didn’t need an introduction. He didn’t need a lectern or a projector or anything at all, really, just a table for some props and some space to walk around in.

“I’m doing the talking right now,” Hindi reminded us, in what came closest to an introduction, “but I want to hear from you guys. You guys have the experience and the time on the streets. It’s your butts out there on the line! If you hear something you disagree with, challenge me! Take me to the carpet if you hear… Continue

Reaching Out To Haiti By Karen L. Bune

The United States is a generous, caring, and selfless nation that always responds to people and countries in need. The latest event with tremendous impact that cries out to the hearts and souls of humanity is the horrific earthquake that has impacted Haiti with innumerable deaths and many bodies yet undiscovered amidst the rubble not to mention those who survived but sustained critical injuries.

One example of many victims of this terrible event is Netlyn Bernard—a Haitian woman who… Continue

What did the talk show host say?

He didn’t say not to give to Haiti, he said, “We already gave aid to Haiti,” calling it the U.S. Tax. THAT IS discouraging advice. What would we think of anyone offering that opinion if an earthquake happened in America?

Look Haiti needs your 5 dollar donation. This isn’t about conservative, liberal, straight, gay, male, female, black or white. We are all children of the world, what it is about is saving humanity.

Here’s the math.

I’m not a mathematician… Continue

Fallen RCMP Member in Haiti: Sgt. Mark Gallagher

2010-01-14

It is with great sadness that I report to all members of Law Officer Connect that Sgt. Mark Gallagher of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, was found today in Port Au Prince , Haiti. Sadly, Sgt.Gallagher's residence had collapsed during the catastrophic earthquake which hit the impoverished nation earlier this week. Sgt.Gallagher was in Haiti along with the Canadian Policing Contingent , whom were assisting in the training of law enforcement in Haiti, and conducting Peace… Continue

Here's an interesting post by my colleague Lisa Bell, EMT-B, about drawing blood from DUI suspects.

Time to Defrag

Don't get bug eyed at your trials. Satan uses all types of distractions to get you off the right path that God has laid down for you. He will even use good things (like watching hours of sports) just to get you to be too tired to read the Bible or pray. Maybe you're working out at the gym so often that you're too tired and don't have time to pray. Satan doesn't need to use evil things against you. He'll use the apple from the Garden! Remember Eve?… Continue

FOR D.C. MPD DETECTIVE BAYLOR, POLITICS SHOULD NOT RULE By Karen L. Bune

The talk of the town in the D.C. region and now, thanks to media and social outlets, the talk of the nation, is the recent snowball episode in Washington, D. C. in which a large group of individuals congregated on public streets for a snowball throwing event in the aftermath of a large snowstorm in the nation’s capitol. When they pelted a vehicle with snowballs, they didn’t know they smacked the personal vehicle of a police officer—Detective Michael Baylor of the Washington, D. C. Metropolitan… Continue

Prince George's County Crime Reduction Produces Button-Popping Pride by Karen L. Bune

Prince George’s County Maryland Police Chief Roberto Hylton, his command staff, and every officer in the department would be wise to ensure they have a seamstress on hand because they should all be proudly popping off their uniform buttons due to the success they have demonstrated in reducing crime significantly in their community. Overall crime for the year 2009 is down 12% in Prince George’s County.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is the 32nd largest police department… Continue

Lights Shine for Officers

January 3, 2010

By KEVIN CALLAHAN

Courier-Post Staff

Adria McMeekin drove down her street and saw five houses in a row with a blue light in the window.

"It made me feel happy when I saw them," Adria said.

Adria, a 7-year-old from Washington Township, remembered her father, Thomas J. McMeekin Jr., an Atlantic City police officer who was killed in the line of duty five years ago, by starting Project Blue Light in her neighborhood. Project Blue… Continue
