Lights on Hand Guns

I am evaluating the Sig Sauer 226 for departmental use.  I am looking at whether or not to recommend lights attached to the front lower rail.  I don't know if this piece of equipment is vital and should be included with the hand gun.   I would like to have some input into this.  Any recommendations, experience would be of great assistance.  Thanks for your response to this in advance.

"Couldn't agree with you more Larry. The downsides just outweigh any upsides and it is dangerous for both you and innocents. Multiple lights at your disposal is the way to go. As they say, one is none and two is one, and three is better."

"Stay away from weapon mounted lights. Keep 2 or more handheld lights available and a third in your patrol vehicle. I have found over the years that I would rather keep the light seperated from the pistol ia much more fluid."

"The biggest downside(fatal) you now let the perp know your exact location. I used my ol 4 cell flashlight  in my non shooting hand away from my body. Let em guess. I servived over 25 years."

"I view pointing a handgun mounted light at someone with the same disdain as I do those "Bubbas" who spot with their riflescope while hunting. You are pointing a sighted in and loaded firearm at someone who may or may not need to be shot.…"

"Good article Chuck. I have tested the Surefire DG (grip pressure) switch you mention and agree that it is probably the best one out there. It is pretty intuitive and instinctive to use. And if you are going to have a light on a gun, I would think…"

"Another issue one needs to be aware of with the Glock .40s, both the 22 and 23, is that malfunctions caused by the light being mounted are very common. Testing needs to be done with the light on the gun, with duty ammo, before the gun is carried on…"

"The real issue in LE is the lack of training on new gear such as WMLs, and trainers who don't know what they don't know. Ref the FSRC article, that is one of the few times I have had to disagree with Dr. Lewinski.   I was hired as an…"
