My full time career is that of a medic. I work 16 to 20 hours a week as an officer. Regarding firearms, the ambulance company is strictly against it, although the owner is very supportive of our TEMS program. Because we are not a goernment entity, and therefore eligable for grant funding, all of the equipment purchases, overtime and shift coverage come out of our regular operating budget. Some of the justifications for the decision not to arm include: Weapon security, Workman's comp and insurance issues, certification and authorization (NY) and Public opinion. If the organization wanted to move forward with it, I think that the departments we serve would not have a problem with it.
