I see that some members are trying to locate my books! Marilyn Walton here, author of the Badge on My Collar Books. The books are sold online worldwide. The USPCA also sells them on their website. amazon.com has them as well, and if anyone wants an autographed copy of either of the books, email, and I will be glad to get books to you. These books were a labor of love to do.

S.J. - You and your family will be in my thought and prayers. Gunny sounds like a very special partner who gave all he was to the job and to his community. I am so proud to hear about the response of your fellow canine officers - WAY TO GO GUYS!!!
Malachi and I will donate a couple of large bags of food to the Humane Society in Gunny's honor this weekend.
Gunny - you served well, now rest in well knowing your job is done.

I understand the pain, I had to put down my GSD Tippy 3 years ago and it was one of the hardest days I have ever had. It is a moment we all know will come when we take a dog into our hearts. As a handler we spend all our time with our partners and come to trust them more than people and the connection is so strong that it is like loosing an officer.

05/18/2008 was a bad day. For all you handlers it's a terrible, stressful and emotional day when it comes time to put your partner down. My partner Gunny was my road partner for 8 1/2 years my constant companion. I've retired 2 other canines and it was difficult, but this one was really tuff. The time had come for my retired partner. There was something special as well that came out of this. I had been conducting a canine class yesterday when I came home from the training it was time to take my partner to the vet, what a difficult time. My daughter and I loaded Gunny into out suv, my daughter stayed home she said she couldn't see him put down my son just stayed away he couldn't bear it either. My wife drove and Gunny and I was in the back. He laid his head on my lap and I talked with him as I always did. We arrived at the vets my wife went in to let them know we arrived. Gunny and I remained in the suv with the hatch open and just sat. About 20 minutes passed when I saw a line of patrol units arriving in the parking lot. I realized these units were my canine class 6 canine units, they pulled into the lot placed their units in a line across the rear and a few feet from the my suv and activated their lights went to the corner of their units and stood. Gunny lifted his head and just watched, he hardly put his head down, he would just watch them. While this was happening some old fart came up next to my suv and said, "What the hell is that all about?" He looked at me with Gunny still watching the patrol cars, I told him this was my partner a retired police canine with 8 1/2 years of service and he was being put down due to his health, they are here for him. He excused himself and left. While waiting for the vet to come out several of the vet techs came out to say their good-bys Gunny was a well liked K9, in fact several of the techs remembered us since we did hundreds of demos in the community and schools. They all had tears in their eyes. My vet arrived and we started the procedure, once Gunny passed my canine class came to me and said they were taking possession of Gunny, they said they were taking him to a pet mortuary that was owned by a retired trooper. He offers free cremations for law enforcement canines. They took Gunny and carried him placed him in a patrol vehicle and provided a canine unit escort to the mortuary. Most citizens have never seen anything like this but once they heard what it was I received numerous emails and phone called. I will get Gunny's ashes later this week. What a great partner he never left my side and I never left his. For you new handlers you never prepare yourself enough for these situations, I hope you have the support as I have from my guys and gals in the canine field. I will continue to train but it will be hard not to see my partner each day.

Try here for custom harnesses:

They made mine to order and adjust it, if needed. I'll post a picture of one of mine from there, with add-on reflective strips.
